Music

 

Music is a group of sounds that are made and then arranged in a pleasing or meaningful way. All cultures of the world make some form of music making it a universal language that all can learn, be creative with and explore. Through exploring music children learn to listen, recreate and create their own interpretations of what it means to them.  Music encourages independence, builds confidence, self-esteem and can create a sense of togetherness and group identity.

 

Intent

  • To provide a stimulating music curriculum, that engages and inspires children to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians
  • To use their voices expressively and creatively by singing songs and speaking chants and Rhymes
  • To play tuned and untuned instruments musically
  • To listen with concentration and understanding to a range of high-quality live and recorded music
  • To experiment with, create, select and combine sounds using the inter-related dimensions of music.

 

Implementation 

Hillside Infant School Music curriculum is broken down into four key components each strand developing children’s skill and understanding of music.   The ‘Play and Perform’ strand focuses on children’s ability to control sounds through singing and playing tuned or untuned instruments.  ‘Create and Compose’ targets children’s ability to create and develop musical ideas.  The ‘Evaluation and Appraisal’ strand focuses on responding, reviewing and expressing their thoughts about a piece of music.  The final strand ‘Listening and applying knowledge and understanding’ focuses on children’s ability to unpick sounds and patterns they can hear and discuss the intentions of a piece of music and to create their own pieces of music selecting appropriate instruments to create the desired effects.  

 

Through these key components of music all children are taught to perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of genres and styles.  Children learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others. Children develop their understanding and explore how music is created, produced and communicated through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture and structure.

 

EYFS: Sing Familiar Songs, Repeated Rhythms, Exploring Sounds of Instruments, Sing Songs and Make Music.

 

KS1:  Exploring sounds, Pulse and Rhythm, Untuned and Tuned Instruments, Exploring Pitch and Duration, Dynamics and Tempo, Timbre, Texture and Structure.
