At Hillside Infant school we believe in developing and a life long love of reading. We have lots of ways of fostering this love for reading. These include…

  • Children using the school library weekly to take books home to share with families.
  • Junior children reading stories to children within Nursery and Reception
  • All children visiting Northwood Hills Library each half term to hear stories and learn about the library.
  • Volunteer readers reading with children skills each week.
  • Reading Bookworm club for pupils in Year 2.

Each year group study a key author and learning about the author and their books as well as dress up days as one of their favourite story characters.

Nursery- Eric Carle

Reception- Julia Donaldson

Year 1- David Walliams

Year 2- Roald Dahl

Reading Schemes

We use the Oxford Reading Tree reading scheme, Big Cat Phonics and Project X in school.

Early Years Foundation Stage

Children begin to develop their reading skills and love of reading in Nursery. Children are given many opportunities to choose books during independent learning. Books are shared during key worker group time and children are encouraged to retell and read stories from memory using Talk4wriiting strategies and Box Clever strategies. This helps children to develop story language.

In Reception children take two reading schemes books home linked into the children's ability that they have read within class.

Children are given the opportunities to develop more in depth understanding of key texts and apply reading skills during guided reading sessions. Guided reading happens each morning.

In addition children are heard read on an individual basis with a variety of staff throughout the school.

Pupils continue to take home books from the reading schemes, school library and other class books related to their termly topics.
