Our Key Word Books support children’s spelling and handwriting development. The key words for each term are organised into weekly spelling focuses, so children and families can clearly see the words being practised each week.
Children practise their focus words in school using our pre-cursive handwriting style and are expected to practise these words at home throughout the week. Regular practice helps children build confidence, develop accurate spelling and reinforce their handwriting skills.
The weekly lists include both new and familiar words, giving children opportunities to learn new vocabulary while revisiting words they already know.
Children are tested on their weekly key words each Monday. If a child needs additional practice, this will be provided in school. Families can use the Key Word Book to see which words their child is currently learning and support regular practice at home.
For children who are new to English or who are not yet ready to take part in the full Key Word programme, Writing Foundations provides additional support with essential spelling and word knowledge.
The programme complements our existing phonics and writing provision. Children work through a structured three-week cycle, with five carefully selected focus words introduced and practised during each cycle.
The focus words are recorded in each child’s Key Word Book, providing a consistent and accessible reference point for children, teachers and families. Children should practise these words regularly at home throughout the three-week cycle, alongside the support and practice they receive in school.
