Learning how to use the toilet independently and stopping wearing nappies is a big milestone for your child.

Most children achieve continence before the age 3 and at around 2 years old. It is our expectation that children will be completely toilet trained by the time they start at Hillside Infant school nursery.

However, we recognise that some children have different rates of physical and sensory development which can require a personalised approach towards supporting them during their time at school.

    Key support strategies for toileting:

    • Preparation & Routine: Introduce a potty or toilet, making it accessible (e.g., placing one upstairs and downstairs). Create a routine by taking the child to the toilet at expected times, such as when they wake up.
    • Encouragement & Motivation: Use positive reinforcement like praise or sticker charts for trying, even if unsuccessful.
    • Managing Accidents: Avoid showing frustration or punishing accidents. Treat them calmly and continue to encourage the child.
    • Physical Setup: Ensure the bathroom is welcoming and comfortable, potentially adding, toys, books, or, for children with sensory needs, adjusting the environment.
    • Practical Steps: Use loose, easy-to-remove clothing. Keep nappies/pull-ups off during the day to help them understand the sensation of being wet or needing to go.
