    What should my child be able to do in Year 1?

    Children develop at different rates, but these are the typical expectations for a child working at the expected level by the end of each term.

    End of Autumn Term • Read simple sentences using phonics
    • Recognise and read common words
    • Answer simple questions about what they have read
    • Write simple sentences
    • Use finger spaces and full stops
    • Spell some words using phonics
    • Count forwards and backwards to 20 and beyond
    • Read and write numbers to 20
    • Add and subtract small numbers
    End of Spring Term • Read short books with more confidence
    • Use phonics to read new words
    • Retell stories and talk about characters
    • Write a few sentences linked together
    • Use capital letters and full stops mostly correctly
    • Spell common words more accurately
    • Count, read and write numbers to 50
    • Add and subtract within 20
    • Understand tens and ones
    End of Summer Term • Read a range of books fluently
    • Show understanding by answering questions
    • Use expression when reading
    • Write several sentences for different purposes
    • Use capital letters, full stops and some question marks
    • Spell many common words correctly
    • Count, read and write numbers to 100
    • Add and subtract within 20 confidently
    • Recognise half and quarter
    • Solve simple word problems
