We provide a rich and varied writing curriculum that inspires children to become confident, creative, and independent writers. We believe that a structured approach to modelling and scaffolding writing is key to developing strong writing skills.
In the Early Years, children build early writing foundations through a wide range of purposeful mark-making opportunities, including sand, foam, chalk, paint, and outdoor writing activities that develop strength, control, and confidence.
Across the school, writing is inspired by high-quality texts and a wide range of engaging stimuli that reflect our diverse community. Writing opportunities are also carefully linked to our topics to ensure learning is meaningful and purposeful.
We use Talk for Writing and The Literacy Tree to support and enrich writing. Talk for Writing helps children learn language patterns through speaking, actions, and imitation before applying them independently. The Literacy Tree provides rich, engaging texts that inspire high-quality writing and develop a love of language.
Handwriting
We follow the Letter-Join handwriting scheme from Reception to Year 2 to ensure consistent development of handwriting skills. Children are taught correct letter formation and develop fluency through structured practice. In Year 2, children who are ready are encouraged to begin joining their handwriting from the end of the Autumn term.
