Year 2 Learning Goals

What should my child be able to do in Year 2?

Children develop at different rates, but these are the typical expectations for a child working at the expected level by the end of each term.

End of Autumn Term

• Read aloud with increasing confidence

• Recognise common words and high-frequency words

• Begin to talk about stories and characters

• Write simple sentences for different purposes

• Use capital letters, full stops, and finger spaces

• Spell common words using phonics

• Count, read, and write numbers to 100

• Add and subtract 2-digit numbers using objects or drawings

• Recognise simple 2D and 3D shapes

End of Spring Term

• Read a wider range of books fluently

• Understand texts and answer questions

• Begin to predict what might happen next

• Write longer sentences and short paragraphs

• Use capital letters, full stops, and question marks

• Spell many common words correctly

• Add and subtract 2-digit numbers mentally and using methods

• Count in steps of 2, 3, 5, and 10

• Understand tens and ones (place value)

• Begin to measure length, mass, and time

End of Summer Term

• Read fluently with expression

• Show understanding by summarising and explaining

• Read a range of fiction and non-fiction books

• Write multiple sentences in paragraphs for stories, instructions, or information

• Use punctuation correctly (capital letters, full stops, question marks)

• Spell most common words accurately

• Confidently add and subtract 2-digit numbers

• Begin to multiply and divide small numbers

• Recognise simple fractions (½, ⅓, ¼)

• Solve simple word problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
