History helps children develop a strong sense of their place in time and an understanding of how the past has shaped the present. Through exploring different periods, events, and people, children begin to recognise change over time, compare perspectives, and understand how we know what we know about the past.
Our History curriculum is structured around five key strands: chronological understanding, knowledge and understanding, historical enquiry, key knowledge and skills, and historical vocabulary. These threads are carefully developed across all year groups to ensure clear progression in both skills and understanding.
We use an enquiry-based approach to learning in History, encouraging children to ask questions, investigate evidence, and think critically about the past. Children are supported to explore historical sources and begin to understand the difference between fact, interpretation, and opinion.
Across the school, children are given opportunities to develop their understanding through hands-on, engaging experiences that bring history to life. This includes the use of artefacts, role-play, visitors, and memorable experiences that help children connect with the time period being studied. Where possible, learning is also supported through meaningful hooks such as trips and immersive activities.
Children are encouraged to explore history from different perspectives, helping them to develop curiosity, empathy, and a deeper understanding of how people lived in the past.
