Physical Education (PE) is a compulsory part of the curriculum. At Hillside Infant School, we ensure children receive high-quality PE provision, with at least two hours of PE each week for children of statutory school age.
At Hillside, we aim to promote healthy, active lifestyles and support the Chief Medical Officer’s recommendation that children take part in at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day in school. We also ensure effective use of the Primary PE and Sport Premium to enhance the quality of PE and sport provision.
Our PE curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure progression of knowledge and skills from the Early Years through to Year 2. Children develop their skills across a range of activities including games, dance, gymnastics and athletics.
In EYFS, children take part in weekly PE sessions alongside continuous physical development opportunities through outdoor learning. In Key Stage 1, children have two PE sessions each week led by their class teacher.
In the Spring term, children are taught a gymnastics unit where one lesson per week is delivered by Sharon from Northwood Gymnastics Club, with the class teacher delivering the second session. This supports high-quality coaching and ensures children develop strong core gymnastics skills.
We are fortunate to have well-equipped outdoor spaces, including playground areas, a trim trail, and dedicated outdoor learning environments for Nursery and Reception, supporting the development of fundamental movement skills.
An annual Sports Day in July allows children to apply and celebrate their learning in a fun, active event.
We value strong community partnerships that enhance our PE provision, including:
