    Welcome to Reception

Here at Hillside, we believe that play is a very important part of your child’s development and most learning will be introduced through a mixture of carefully planned play and some adult-led-focused activities. As the Reception year progresses, the learning may start to become more formal in preparation for Year 1 and the National Curriculum.

In Reception, the curriculum we work through is the ‘Early Years Foundation Stage’.

    The Seven Areas of Learning:

    Prime Areas:

    • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

    • Communication and Language

    • Physical Development

    Specific Areas:

    • Literacy

    • Mathematics

    • Understanding the World

    • Expressive Arts and Design

All of these areas are covered within the planning. The topic web gives an overview of the objectives we are aiming to achieve.

    Reception in action!

    Autumn Term

In the Autumn term, our Reception children begin their school journey by exploring All About Me and Let’s Celebrate. They learn what makes them unique, develop friendships, and settle into the routines of full-time school. Through mark-making, drawing, creative activities, and role-play, children start to express themselves, explore celebrations, and grow in confidence. During this term, they are encouraged to work as a team, try their best, and show kindness and honesty as they discover more about themselves and the world around them.

    Spring Term

In the Spring term, children explore People Who Help Us and Growing. They learn about the roles of helpers in the community, with exciting visits from real police officers, firefighters, doctors, and nurses. As they settle further into school life, children begin to showcase their early reading, writing, and maths skills, exploring numbers, letters, and stories through hands-on activities and imaginative play. This term also opens up the children's curiosity about the natural world. They will discover the natural world through observation and hands-on experiences.

    Summer Term

In the Summer term, children investigate Jungle Animals and explore their imagination with Traditional stories. They have the exciting opportunity to meet real animals, bring learning to life, and continue to develop early reading, writing, and maths skills, writing simple captions, counting to 20, understanding number patterns, and reading short stories. This term fosters exploration, attentiveness, and respect, encouraging children to try their best, use good manners, and show kindness and honesty as they learn about the world around them.
