Computing
Computing
Computing prepares children to participate in a rapidly changing world in which work and other activities are increasingly transformed by access to varied technology. Children use computing to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information responsibly, creatively and with discrimination. The use of Computing promotes initiative and independent learning.
Intent:
- Provide a relevant, challenging and enjoyable curriculum while meeting the curriculum expectations for Technology and Computing for all pupils.
- Use Technology and Computing as a tool to enhance learning throughout the curriculum.
- To respond to new developments in technology.
- To equip pupils with the confidence and capability to use computing throughout their later life.
- To develop the understanding of how to use computing safely and responsibly
Implementation:
Early Years- In Nursery and Reception we will give children:
Using Technology
At Hillside Infant School the opportunity to develop children's use of ‘using technology’ is implemented through a broad, play-based experience of Technology in a range of contexts, including outdoor play. The technology that children have access to consists of wind up toys, remote control cars, bee bots, iPads, interactive white boards, torches, cameras, audio toys. Children are taught how to recognise a range of technology and the ways we use them in school and at home. Here at Hillside Infant school children are able to access and use a range of technology to develop their skills and improve their control. Each classroom is equipped with interactive white boards and we also have a computing suite that each class has a timetabled slot for. Classes are also able to use tablets within their classrooms.
Algorithms and Program
In Nursery and Reception children are encouraged to build confidence, control and language skills through opportunities to explore using non-computer based resources such as metal detectors, programmable toys and walkie-talkie sets. This progresses onto the use of Beebots and programming a device for an outcome.
Data Retrieving and organising
Children are taught how to collect and discuss data progressing to inserting data into pictograms and answer questions about it. Children will collate information such as how they travel to school, what hair colour they have, their favourite animals etc this is then put into a pictogram using non technological equipment (paper and pictures) and then transferred onto a programme on Purplemash called 2count pictogram.
E Safety
Here at Hillside Infant school we promote that all children understand the importance of online safety and to do this within the Early years learning environment we feature technology scenarios based on experience in the real world, such as in role play. Children at these early stages are encouraged to talk about any problems they encounter whilst online. We use a range of online texts within the school to support this i.e. Smartie the Penguin and Detective Digi Duck. Other texts that are used are called Webster’s email and chicken clicking.
Communicating/ Presentations
Children are given opportunities through planned and free choice activities to use digital devices to take photographs, record sound and create a picture to portray meaning. We have a range of resources available for children to use; interactive white boards, iPads, voice recorders and purple mash logins to access 2paint programmes.
KS1- In Year 1 and Year 2 children will:
Using Technology
In KS1 at Hillside Infant school children take the next steps into understanding technology. They are given the opportunity to improve their keyboard skill, save their work, edit work, film short scenes and select appropriate technology for a particular purpose.
Algorithms and Program
Children are taught what algorithms are, how they are implemented as programs on digital devices, and that programs execute by following a sequence of instructions. They are given the opportunity to write and test simple programs and use logical reasoning to predict and computing the behaviour of simple programs. children can access this through bee bots, pro-bots, purple mash 2code
Data Retrieving and organising
We develop children's ability to be to organise, store, manipulate and retrieve data in a range of digital formats
E Safety
To progress children's understanding of the importance of online safety, children are taught and shown how to communicate safely and respectfully online, keeping personal information private, and recognise common uses of information technology beyond school. To progress from EYFS children are taught in more depth about what information we should and should not share online, they show their understanding by creating a poster of safe information to share about themselves when online. Here at Hillside we feel that children should understand that there is a person sat behind the screen and just as we keep ourselves safe in public we should do so online.
Communicating/ Presentations
Throughout KS1 children are taught about the use of sending emails. They are given the opportunities to send and receive emails to one another. Children are also shown how to input information to a computer or table to create a presentation allowing them time to edit and make changes to the their work. Children are exposed to a range of programmes that allow them to do this; Microsoft word, Microsoft PowerPoint, purple mash individual save trays
Parents as Partners
On the school website within the safeguarding folder parents have access to a range of resources to support them and keep their children safe whilst online.
Parents are given their child's logins for purple mash, where teachers can set ‘to do' tasks for children to complete at home. Each class has its own Class Dojo where parents are able to communicate with their class teacher (via their own logins)
