This is a Ten Frame. It is a resource that we use in school to support children when learning about number bonds and when adding and subtracting.
Number Bonds on a Ten Frame
This is a Ten Frame. It is used to support children when they are learning their number bonds to and within 10.
Reception are expected to learn number bonds securely up to and within 5 e.g. 4+1=5, 3+2=5, 5+0=5 and some number bonds to 10 e.g. 2+8=10, 1+9=10 etc
Year 1 are expected to use number bonds and related facts within 20 e.g. 4+1=5, 5-1=4
Year 2 are expected to recall all number bonds to and within 10 and use these to reason and calculate bonds to and within 20 e.g. 1+9=10, 1+19=20.
Addition on a Ten Frame
Children can use a Ten Frame to support them when adding two 1 digit numbers. They will use different coloured counters to represent each number e.g. 3 red counters + 6 yellow counters = 9 counters in total.
Subtraction on a Ten Frame
Children can use a Ten Frame to support them when subtracting. They will represent the biggest number on their Ten Frame using counters and then remove the number they are subtracting away. They will count the remaining counters to find the answer.
